Tocotrienols are one of the forms of vitamin E, related to tocopherols but with a slightly different structure. In cosmetics they work as antioxidants: they help defend both the skin and the formula itself from oxidative stress and help keep skin soft. There is a reasonable basis behind this. Vitamin E is a classic, well-studied topical antioxidant, and tocotrienols share that mechanism. They work as a supporting antioxidant active, useful mainly as a complement to photoprotection and alongside other antioxidants, not as a replacement for sunscreen. Applied topically they have no systemic relevance, so they can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good. Irritation and allergy potential are low, which makes them suitable for sensitive skin. In cosmetic formulas most people show no reaction.
