About this ingredient

Beta-Carotene is a tetraterpene of 8 isoprene units, found in carrots, pumpkin and spinach. INCI: Beta-Carotene. In the body it serves as a precursor of retinol. Topically in cosmetics it works as an antioxidant (absorbs singlet oxygen) and a pigment (orange-yellow). It does not convert to retinol on the skin – there is no systemic retinol effect from topical use. Used in sunscreens, anti-aging creams and after-sun products. Use levels run from 0.01 to 0.5%. Pregnancy safety. Topically safe. Oral high doses (over 25,000 IU/day) can cause hypervitaminosis A, but this does not apply to cosmetic use. Skin profile. Low irritation and allergen potential. Non-comedogenic. Suitable for all skin types.
