A cationic thickening and conditioning polymer. It stabilizes texture and eases combing. Well tolerated.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
A functional conditioning polymer. Safe.
Polyquaternium-37 (INCI Polyquaternium-37) is a synthetic cationic polymer. In a formula it acts as a thickener and conditioning agent: it gives gels and emulsions a pleasant texture, and in hair products its positive charge lets it settle on the surface and improve combing. This is a functional texture and conditioning ingredient, not a skincare active. It does its job well and predictably: it stabilises consistency, gives a smooth glide and reduces tangling in hair. You should not expect any deep action on the skin from it, since its purpose is different. During pregnancy and breastfeeding the ingredient raises no concerns. The large polymer molecule stays on the surface and does not penetrate the skin, so it can be used without restriction. Tolerance is high. The irritation potential is low, the allergy risk is low, and it suits sensitive skin. Cationic polymers of this kind have long been used in cosmetics, and reactions to them are rare.

The Evigrade extension adds an evidence panel to iHerb, Sephora, Druni and 12 more stores. This ingredient and every other one in the product show evidence-tier, allergen risk and pregnancy/lactation flags at a glance.
Polyquaternium-37 is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
Polyquaternium-37 suits: normal, dry, combination, oily, sensitive.
