In a formula it helps dissolve and spread other ingredients, softens the skin and gives a pleasant feel without heaviness. It appears in lotions, hair products and formulas where poorly water-compatible components need solubilizing. This is a functional ingredient, not a treatment active. Its work is to dissolve and add slip, which improves the product's texture and spread. It has no notable biological action on the skin, so it is best seen as formula support. With topical use its systemic relevance is minimal, so you can use it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good: irritation and allergy potential are both low, and it suits sensitive skin. At usual cosmetic levels it tends not to dry the skin or cause comedogenic trouble.
