It softens skin, improves how the product spreads, and helps dissolve actives and poorly soluble ingredients in the formula. It is a functional component, not a treatment active. Its role is sensory and supporting: it gives a pleasant feel, slip and better distribution, but it does not deeply hydrate or treat skin. It is a useful piece of the formula's architecture. Topically its systemic absorption is negligible, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is high: low irritation potential and low allergy risk, fine for sensitive skin. Comedogenicity is low (1), so most oily skin tolerates it well, though strongly acne-prone skin may want to watch its response in leave-on products.
