Pyruvic acid (INCI: Pyruvic Acid) is an alpha-keto acid that also turns up in cell metabolism as an intermediate. Cosmetics use it two ways: at high strength as an exfoliating acid in professional peels, and at low levels as part of cofactor blends or as a formula pH adjuster. At the usual cosmetic levels in an over-the-counter product it does not act as a strong exfoliating active. Here it works more as a supporting functional component. Any real resurfacing effect depends on concentration and pH, which belongs mainly to in-office peels. Applied topically it is barely absorbed systemically, so at cosmetic doses it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. For concentrated in-clinic peels, follow the practitioner's judgment. Tolerance at low levels is good and the allergy potential is low. In more acidic formulas it can cause stinging or passing redness, especially on sensitive or barrier-compromised skin.
