Rhus Verniciflua Peel Cera is a plant wax processed from the bark of the Japanese lacquer tree. Its INCI name is Rhus Verniciflua Peel Cera. In a formula it thickens the oil phase and helps solid sticks and balms hold their shape. This is a functional ingredient, not an active. It does not correct skin concerns; it gives the product structure and firmness. In that structuring role it performs well. Used topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. General tolerance is high, with a low irritation and allergy potential and very low comedogenicity (1 of 5). One note is worth making: the raw Rhus plant is known for sensitizing urushiols, but the refined cosmetic wax is processed to remove them. Even so, people with very reactive skin may want to patch test a small area first.
