Rhus succedanea fruit cera (INCI: Rhus Succedanea Fruit Cera), known as Japan wax, is a plant wax obtained from the sumac fruit. In cosmetics it structures sticks and balms, gives a soft, pliable texture and leaves a protective film on the skin. This is a functional component, not a skincare active. Its job is to give body and consistency to the formula and to provide an emollient film that helps retain water. It handles that structural role well, but no treatment effect should be expected from it. Applied topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation potential and low allergy risk. Its comedogenicity is very low, level 1, so it rarely causes trouble even on combination skin. It is a well-tolerated plant wax, useful in anhydrous and stick formulas that aim for a soft texture.
