Soapwort extract (INCI Saponaria Officinalis Leaf/Root Extract) comes from the leaves and root of the plant. Its defining feature is natural saponins, compounds that lower the surface tension of water and produce a gentle foam. In a formula it works as a supporting plant surfactant and gives mild cleansing, which is why it shows up in cleansing gels and products for sensitive skin. On efficacy, this is a functional component, not a care active. It cleanses and helps the product lather, but it does not address wrinkles or pigment, so judge it by what it actually does. Applied topically, saponins carry no systemic relevance, so the extract can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good. Irritation and allergy potential are low, which makes it suitable for sensitive skin. People who are already sensitized may see an occasional reaction, though most do not.
