INCI: Hippophae Rhamnoides Oil
Rich orange oil with carotenoids, vitamin E and omega-7. Restores dry skin and at higher doses can tint skin and fabrics.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Small studies show accelerated healing and reduced erythema after UV stress. Most research is lab-based or uses oral intake; large topical RCTs are scarce.
Sea buckthorn oil (Hippophae Rhamnoides Oil) is a thick deep-orange oil from sea buckthorn berries or seeds. The richest natural source of carotenoids (β-carotene, lycopene, zeaxanthin), the rare omega-7 fatty acid among plant oils (palmitoleic, 25-40% in fruit oil), vitamin E, phytosterols. Two oil types. Fruit oil (from pulp and skin) – orange, high carotenoids and omega-7. Seed oil – yellow-orange, dominated by omega-3 (α-linolenic) and omega-6 (linoleic). Labels often don't distinguish; for anti-aging and regeneration fruit oil is better. Where applied. Serums and creams for very dry and mature skin, post-damage recovery products (burns, post-surgery wounds, post-radiation therapy), body products for psoriasis and eczema (0.5-100%, often 1-5% in creams due to intense orange color). In Spain – in Sesderma, Mussvital, niche natural brands. In clinical practice – in post-radiation products. Evidence base. Yang 2014 (n=49, post-surgical wounds) showed 30% acceleration of epithelialization. Maheshwari 2011 (RCT, burn surface, n=150) – reduced pain and faster healing. Khan 2017 in keratinocyte cultures – activation of migration and proliferation. Evidence level for regeneration – B. Tinting – a known issue. High carotenoid concentration tints skin and clothing yellow on direct contact. Manufacturers address through emulsification in the formula or recommend evening application. Safety. CIR confirmed sea buckthorn oil safety. Allergic reactions are rare. Comedogenic rating 1 – on acne-prone skin occasionally triggers comedones. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. A natural food oil, no restrictions. Orally as a supplement also safe. In Finland and Siberia traditionally used to soften skin during pregnancy.

Sea Buckthorn Oil is considered safe during pregnancy at typical cosmetic concentrations. Systemic absorption through the skin is minimal.
Sea Buckthorn Oil suits: dry, normal, sensitive.
Rich orange oil with carotenoids, vitamin E and omega-7.
On the Fulton scale 1/5 – very low comedogenicity. For acne-prone skin, a rating of 3 or higher suggests choosing an alternative.
