Emulsion thickener and stabilizer. Creates a gel-like texture, keeps the oil phase in water, safe for sensitive skin.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Functional thickening polymer. Allergy and irritation are rare.
Sodium Acrylate/Sodium Acryloyldimethyl Taurate Copolymer (SEPPIC trade name Simulgel) is a synthetic polymer for thickening and stabilizing emulsions. Made by copolymerization of sodium acrylate and sodium acryloyldimethyl taurate monomers. Forms a three-dimensional gel network that holds water and oils in emulsion. Where applied. Gel-creams and light serums (0.5-2%), sunscreens with mineral filters, eye-contour creams, fluids, products for oily and combination skin. Major advantage over carbomers – no alkali neutralization needed, works in finished form. In Spain in Bioderma, La Roche-Posay, Sesderma, ISDIN. Sensory profile. Gives formulas a light, soft-gliding texture with fast absorption. No film, no 'greasy' feel. Particularly suitable for oily skin and for daytime formulas under makeup. Safety. CIR confirmed safety of acryloyldimethyl taurate copolymers (Final Report 2014). Hypoallergenic, non-irritating, non-comedogenic. Suitable for sensitive, acne-prone, atopic skin. Monomer controversy. Free acrylic acid and acryloyldimethyl taurate monomers are skin-irritating and potentially toxic. The copolymer is a safe product of full polymerization, with only trace free monomers remaining. EFfCI GMP industry standards control this parameter. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. The polymer molecule does not penetrate intact skin, no systemic absorption. No restrictions in any product.
