Undecane is a linear hydrocarbon with 11 carbon atoms. Made synthetically from plant feedstock. A light volatile emollient that pairs with tridecane to form the Cetiol Ultimate system (BASF). Mechanism. Fills intercorneocyte spaces, smooths skin, evaporates within 5-15 minutes (faster than tridecane). Leaves no greasy film. Dissolves UV filters and silicones well. An alternative to cyclopentasiloxane (D5) after the 2018 EU restrictions. Where applied. Sunscreens (especially sprays and light lotions), primers, lightweight serums. In Spain – in Heliocare Color Spray, Isdin Fotoultra Spray, La Roche-Posay Anthelios Invisible Spray. Use levels: 1-15%. Evidence base. Functional ingredient. BASF documentation shows improved sunscreen spread and lower stickiness. Doesn't treat the skin but enhances the formula's feel. Safety. CIR confirmed the safety of the whole C7-C16 alkane group in 2018. Non-sensitising, non-comedogenic (rating 0). Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Usable in sunscreens and creams without restrictions.
