In cosmetics it is used in small amounts as a pH adjuster and solvent: it brings the formula's acidity to the target value and helps keep it stable. Unlike free glycolic acid, which exfoliates, here it works as a buffer at a low concentration, so in the finished product it gives no exfoliating effect on skin.
