Sodium glycolate (INCI: Sodium Glycolate) is the sodium salt of glycolic acid. In cosmetics it is used in small amounts as a pH adjuster and solvent: it brings the formula's acidity to the target value and helps keep it stable. This is a functional process component, not a skincare active. Unlike free glycolic acid, which exfoliates, here it works as a buffer at a low concentration, so in the finished product it gives no exfoliating effect on skin. Its work is technical and behind the scenes. In topical use, and at the usual amounts, it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without trouble. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy potential at use levels. It is one of those ingredients that stay unnoticed precisely because they only fine-tune pH.
