Tris Buffered Saline (INCI Tris Buffered Saline) is a salt water solution with a Tris buffer, often used as a base and carrier for biotech actives. In a formula it keeps a stable pH, protects sensitive ingredients such as peptides and enzymes, and helps them retain their activity. On efficacy, this is a functional carrier and pH stabiliser, not a skincare active. On its own it has no effect on the skin in a finished product: its role is to create comfortable conditions for the other components of a formula. Seeing it on an ingredient list next to peptides is normal; it is part of the technology. During pregnancy and breastfeeding it can be used.
