Tris Buffered Saline (INCI Tris Buffered Saline) is a salt water solution with a Tris buffer, often used as a base and carrier for biotech actives. In a formula it keeps a stable pH, protects sensitive ingredients such as peptides and enzymes, and helps them retain their activity. On efficacy, this is a functional carrier and pH stabiliser, not a skincare active. On its own it has no effect on the skin in a finished product: its role is to create comfortable conditions for the other components of a formula. Seeing it on an ingredient list next to peptides is normal; it is part of the technology. During pregnancy and breastfeeding it can be used. Applied topically the buffer is systemically negligible, with no restrictions. Tolerance is good. The irritation potential is low, the allergy risk is low, and the ingredient suits sensitive skin. The physiological saline environment is close to the skin in composition, so reactions to it are rare.
