Triticum Vulgare Starch is the starch obtained from wheat. In cosmetics it works as an absorbent and texture modifier: it soaks up sebum and moisture, mattifies the skin and gives a soft, velvety feel to powders, masks and creams. This is a functional ingredient, not a treatment active. It improves the sensory feel and the matte finish, but it does not act on wrinkles, pores or pigmentation. Its role is textural. In topical use it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Irritation and allergy potential are low, so it suits sensitive skin. One caveat: in people with diagnosed wheat allergy or skin sensitivity to its proteins, a wheat derivative could trigger a reaction, even though the starch contains almost no protein. For most people it is a comfortable, well tolerated ingredient.
