Mechanism
Calcium carbonate slightly reduces metformin intestinal absorption when taken together. Clinically significant hyperglycaemia has not been described.
Symptoms
The combination usually causes no specific symptoms. Each drug's individual side effects remain.
Management
Take metformin with or just after meals; take calcium carbonate 2 hours after meals or in the evening. On the combination, monitor HbA1c on the usual schedule. In diabetics with osteoporosis, the combination is standard.
