It binds the oil and water phases and keeps the cream uniform and stable. It is used in emulsions, lotions and creams. Its role is functional, not treatment. It gives the formula structure, stability and a pleasant texture, but it is not an active that cares for the skin on its own. It is a good base ingredient for gentle formulas. For topical use it has no systemic relevance and can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
