Cetyl esters (INCI: Cetyl Esters) are a waxy blend of esters used as a plant or synthetic substitute for spermaceti. In cosmetics they soften skin, give a silky texture and add body to creams and sticks. This is a functional component with emollient and texture value. They improve the feel of the product, leave skin soft and help stabilize the consistency of emulsions. They are not a treatment active, but they fill their emollient role well. Applied topically they have no systemic relevance, so they can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation potential and low allergy risk, suitable for sensitive skin. Their comedogenicity is mild, level 2, so oily or acne-prone skin should keep them in mind, especially in rich formulas. On normal or dry skin they add comfort without the usual trouble.
