About this ingredient
Bitter orange peel oil is cold-pressed from the peel of Citrus aurantium. INCI: Citrus Aurantium Amara Peel Oil. In a formula it works as a natural fragrance with a warm citrus aroma. It is a scent component, not a skincare active. The aroma comes from limonene and other volatile peel compounds. An important caveat is phototoxicity. Cold-pressed citrus oils contain furocoumarins (bergapten and relatives) that under UV can trigger photodermatitis: redness and pigment spots on exposed areas. In leave-on daytime products, makers use either furocoumarin-free (FCF) oils or safe levels under IFRA limits. At night and in rinse-off products the risk is minimal. Allergenicity. Citrus oils contain limonene and count as potential fragrance allergens. Pregnancy safety: at cosmetic concentrations topical use is systemically negligible, but because of phototoxicity daytime use calls for care and sun protection.
