Cocamidopropyl Dimethylamine (INCI identical) is a surfactant and conditioning agent derived from coconut oil. In gels, shampoos and cleansers it softens the action of the primary surfactants, gives the skin a conditioned feel and helps build viscosity. Its efficacy is that of a functional ingredient in the cleansing base, not a skincare active. It improves the use experience and rinse-off, without a targeted cosmetic effect on the skin. In rinse-off products and given minimal topical absorption, it is not systemically relevant, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Irritation and allergy potential are low. Still, its harshness on the barrier is moderate: in very concentrated cleansers or with very frequent use it can add to some dryness on sensitive skin. In most well-balanced formulas it is tolerated without issue.
