Cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine (INCI: Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine) is an amphoteric surfactant derived from coconut oil. It is used as a co-surfactant: it cleanses gently, gives a creamy foam and moderates the action of the primary surfactants. This is a functional component, not a skincare active. Its role is cleansing and foam quality, and it raises the overall gentleness of the formula, especially alongside stronger surfactants. It has no treatment effect on the skin. Applied topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is very good, with low irritation potential and low allergy risk, suitable for sensitive skin. It is worth knowing that some coconut ingredients with an amidopropyl group have been linked to sensitization in specific people, but here the reported profile is one of good tolerance, and on its own it does not strip markedly. The final result depends on the full formula system.
