Lauryl hydroxysultaine (INCI: Lauryl Hydroxysultaine) is a mild amphoteric surfactant used as a co-surfactant in gels, shampoos and cleansers. It provides creamy foam and softens the action of the primary surfactants. In terms of role, this is a functional component, not a skincare active. Its job is cleansing and foam texture, which it does well, raising the gentleness of the whole system, especially alongside harsher surfactants. No treatment effect should be expected from it. By nature it has no systemic relevance when applied topically, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is very good: low irritation potential and low allergy risk. It is a mild surfactant, suitable for sensitive skin and for products used often. On its own it does not strip noticeably, though the final result always depends on the full surfactant system in the formula.
