It brings proteins, starch and amino acids, and in a formula it helps hold water and gives skin a more even feel. On efficacy it pays to be realistic. It has a tradition in Asian skincare, but the controlled topical evidence is modest. It works as a supporting humectant and aids comfort. It is not a potent brightener on its own. During pregnancy and breastfeeding it is fine to use topically. Tolerance is good: low irritation and low allergy potential, suitable for sensitive skin.
