Contains nasunin, an anthocyanin with antioxidant potential.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Plant extract. Clinically meaningful effect on human skin is not supported by robust evidence; data limited to in vitro / lab models.
Eggplant Fruit Extract (Solanum Melongena Fruit Extract) is derived from common eggplant Solanum melongena fruit. Contains nasunin (a purple-skinned anthocyanin), chlorogenic acid, ascorbic acid, nicotinamide, minerals. Mechanism. Nasunin is a powerful antioxidant that protects lipid cell membranes from oxidative stress. In vitro it suppresses UV-induced radicals and theoretically slows photoaging. Chlorogenic acid provides extra antioxidant action. Some studies explore the anti-tumor potential of nasunin – but those are oral studies, not relevant to cosmetics. Where applied. Antioxidant serums and creams, anti-photoaging products, niche 'vegetable antioxidants' lines. In Spain it's rare, mostly in niche natural brands and Asian lines. Evidence base. No direct clinical RCTs on topical use. The antioxidant evidence base for nasunin rests on in vitro data and oral studies. Topical skin effect in patients not confirmed. Safety. CIR has not issued a direct evaluation. By the plant extract profile – low irritation and allergy risk. Rare reactions possible in patients allergic to Solanaceae family (tomato, potato, pepper). Pregnancy and lactation – safe at standard cosmetic concentrations. Best suited to: antioxidant defense within a multi-component formula. Not a primary active – a marketing ingredient with a limited evidence base.
