Gamma-octalactone (INCI Gamma-Octalactone) is a fragrance component from the lactone group, with a sweet, fruity scent. In cosmetics it is used to add aroma to perfumes and scented products. On efficacy it is worth being direct: this is an aromatic component, not a care active. Its function is scent, with no proven effect on skin condition. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The point to watch is sensitization. Irritation potential is low, but allergy potential is medium: in people already sensitized to fragrance components it can trigger a contact reaction. Most do not react, but if you have reactive skin or a history of perfume allergy, it is worth patch-testing the product on a small area before wider use.
