Gardenia florida fruit extract (Cape Jasmine) is obtained from the fruit of the gardenia – an evergreen shrub native to East Asia. Traditional Chinese medicine used it for inflammation and jaundice. Composition. Iridoid glycosides (geniposide, crocin), carotenoids, flavonoids. Crocin gives the characteristic yellow color – historically used as a natural dye. Where applied. Soothing creams and serums, sensitive skin products, microbiome-positioned products. More common in Asian skincare (k-beauty, j-beauty). Evidence base. In vitro – antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect (Yamamoto 2014). Clinical RCTs of topical gardenia extract are few; data rest on studies of individual components (crocin, geniposide) in keratinocyte cultures. Safety. CIR has not made a separate assessment. At standard cosmetic concentrations (0.1-1%) – no described contact reactions. Pregnancy – safe topically. Lactation – no data.
