INCI: Citrus Grandis Peel Oil
Grapefruit essential oil with a fresh bitter aroma. Raises the risk of photoreactions and contact dermatitis due to furanocoumarins and oxidized limonene.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Less aggressive than bergamot, but phototoxicity risks remain. Daytime products and sensitive skin should pick other fragrances.
Grapefruit oil (Citrus Paradisi Peel Oil) is cold-pressed from grapefruit peel. Contains limonene (90%+), myrcene, pinene, furanocoumarins (bergapten, bergamottin, 6,7-dihydroxybergamottin). Where applied. Perfumery (fresh citrus notes), scented cosmetics, anti-cellulite products (marketing without evidence), massage oils. Phototoxicity. Furanocoumarins on UV exposure cause phytophotodermatitis – "berloque dermatitis": erythema, blisters, prolonged hyperpigmentation at contact sites. IFRA Restriction: max 4% in leave-on products with furanocoumarin-stripped material; non-furocoumarin-free oils are banned in leave-on. Contact allergy. Oxidized limonene (after storage) sensitizes 1-3% of patients with suspected fragrance allergy. On the EU list of 26 labeled allergens. Safety. Do not apply to skin before sun exposure (within 4 hours), especially in patients with photosensitive skin. Avoid in children and pregnancy. Pregnancy – use with caution. Systemically citrus oils are not contraindicated in pregnancy, but topical phototoxic risk is higher due to hormonal skin photosensitivity (melasma risk).
