Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract (INCI: Hibiscus Sabdariffa Flower Extract) supplies organic acids, anthocyanins, and mucilage. In cosmetics it is used as a humectant and conditioning ingredient, and is sometimes credited with gentle renewal thanks to its plant acids. On efficacy, a qualifier is needed. It does contain natural fruit acids, but at the concentration and pH of a cosmetic extract the exfoliating effect is mild and hardly comparable to a pure AHA. It works better as a supporting humectant and antioxidant than as a real renewing active. The visible improvements marketing promises run ahead of the data. Applied topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without concern. Tolerance is good: irritation and allergy are low, suitable for sensitive skin. Most people show no reaction at usual doses.
