Hyssop Extract (Hyssopus officinalis Extract) is an extract from the aerial parts of hyssop, a Mediterranean Lamiaceae subshrub. Contains flavonoids (diosmin, hesperidin), rosmarinic and caffeic acids, essential oils (pinocamphone, isopinocamphone). Where applied. Serums and creams claiming "soothing" and "antioxidant" action, tonics, mature-skin products (0.1-2%). In Spain – Weleda, Just (Swiss brands sold extensively), niche herbal cosmetic brands. Evidence base. In vitro – antioxidant activity from flavonoids and rosmarinic acid. Antimicrobial action against Staphylococcus and Streptococcus in plate tests. No direct clinical RCTs on topical hyssop. Safety. Hyssop essential oil contains pinocamphone and isopinocamphone – neurotoxic monoterpenes that can trigger seizures with high oral doses. At cosmetic concentrations this risk is absent, but pregnant women are advised to avoid all hyssop forms (risk of uterine contractions). CIR has not made a separate assessment; ESCD does not list it as a frequent allergen. Pregnancy – contraindicated (including topically with essential oil). Lactation – use with caution, no data. Alternatives: chamomile, oat, bisabolol, centella – with better evidence and no risks.
