Jojoba Oil (Simmondsia chinensis Seed Oil) is a liquid wax from seeds of the jojoba shrub, native to the deserts of the southwestern US and Mexico. Chemically not an oil (triglycerides) but a wax – mixture of long-chain esters (C36-C46) with a double bond. Composition is close to human sebum, hence good tolerance. Where applied. Creams, lotions, hair oils, makeup removers, anti-aging serums (1-100%). Suitable even for oily and acne-prone skin – does not weigh down the formula, absorbs quickly. In Spain in Mádara, Sesderma Hidraderm, Natura Bissé, niche natural brands. Evidence base. Pazyar 2013 (meta-review) – improved skin barrier function, reduced TEWL, anti-inflammatory action. RCT in acne patients: adding jojoba oil to a clay mask reduced inflammatory lesions (Meier 2012, 194 patients). In atopic dermatitis – relief of itch and xerosis (Patzelt 2012). Safety. CIR rated jojoba oil safe at cosmetic concentrations (2008, re-evaluated 2019). Allergic reactions are very rare. Comedogenicity low (0-2 on Klein). Does not oxidize quickly thanks to wax structure – long shelf life. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Suitable for all skin types, especially oily, acne-prone, sensitive, atopic.
