INCI: Drometrizole Trisiloxane
Patented lipophilic broad-spectrum filter by L'Oreal. Covers both UVB and UVA ranges and stays stable under sunlight.
Topical application
BLimited evidence. One RCT or several controlled studies with limitations.
Oil-soluble counterpart of Mexoryl SX with broad coverage. Combines well with other filters and boosts the final protection factor.
Mexoryl XL (Drometrizole Trisiloxane) is a photostable broad-spectrum UV filter produced by L'Oréal. Absorbs UVA (320–400 nm) and part of UVB (290–320 nm). Mechanism. The chromophore absorbs UV energy and converts it to heat. Unlike avobenzone, it is photostable – does not break down under UV light. The siloxane chain provides water resistance and application aesthetics. Where applied. Only in L'Oréal Group products (La Roche-Posay Anthelios, Vichy Capital Soleil, Garnier Ambre Solaire). EU Regulation 1223/2009 concentration – up to 15%. Widely available in Spain in La Roche-Posay and Vichy lines. Approved by the FDA in 2006 (Anthelios SX), but the range is limited. Evidence base. The Moyal 2008 clinical study showed protection against photoimmunosuppression and UVA-induced pigmentation. SCCS Opinion SCCS/1185/08 confirmed safety at concentrations up to 15%. Often combined with Mexoryl SX (Ecamsule) and avobenzone for broad-spectrum protection. Safety. Well tolerated. Contact allergies are rare (<0.5%). Systemic skin absorption is minimal. Pregnancy and lactation – manufacturers advise caution. No direct data. First-line alternative in pregnancy – mineral filters (titanium dioxide, zinc oxide). If a chemical filter is chosen – Mexoryl XL is preferred due to large molecule and minimal systemic absorption.
