Phytosteryl canola glycerides (INCI: Phytosteryl Canola Glycerides) derive from rapeseed oil and provide phytosterols, plant lipids similar to those in skin. In creams they act as an emollient and co-emulsifier, softening the surface and helping to stabilize the oil phase. This is a functional component with an interesting nuance: phytosterols fit into the lipid structure of the stratum corneum and can support barrier function. Even so, their main role in the formula is texture and emulsion, not a corrective active. Applied topically they have no meaningful systemic absorption, so they can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy risk, suitable for sensitive skin and skin with a weakened barrier. Comedogenicity is low (1), so the margin on oily or acne-prone skin is comfortable, though individual response is worth watching.
