About this ingredient
Polybutene (INCI: Polybutene) is a viscous synthetic emollient, a liquid polymer made from isobutylene. In a formula it gives a dense film and clear shine, which is why it shows up in lip balms, glosses and glossy-finish textures. On skin it stays on the surface and does not absorb. On efficacy it is a functional component, not a treatment active. It neither hydrates nor repairs: its job is to give the texture body, cling and that wet-look gloss. It does that sensory job well, with no claims beyond it. Topically its systemic absorption is negligible, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding with no known restriction. Tolerance is high: low irritation potential and low allergy risk, suitable for sensitive skin too. Comedogenicity is low (1), but as a tacky occlusive layer, very oily or acne-prone skin may find it a little heavy in closed areas.
