In a formula it acts as an emollient: it softens skin, gives a creamy pleasant texture and leaves lipids that support the barrier. It is a functional texture-and-emollient component rather than a treatment active. It corrects neither wrinkles nor dark spots: its role is feel and comfort. It is widely used in creams, balms and cleansers, where it does that job well and improves how the product spreads. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy. Comedogenicity is moderate-to-low (2 of 5) given the coconut origin, so oily or acne-prone skin may prefer to keep it for dry areas or pick lighter formulas.
