Lauryl Alcohol is a fatty (long-chain) alcohol, very different from the volatile alcohols that can dry skin out. Its INCI matches the name. In a formula it thickens, stabilizes emulsions and softens skin, and also works as a co-structurant alongside other emollients. It is a functional texture-and-emollient component, not a treatment active. It acts on neither wrinkles nor dark spots: its value lies in giving the formula body, stability and a pleasant feel. Worth clarifying: despite the word alcohol, it is neither astringent nor dehydrating. Topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy, fine for sensitive skin. Comedogenicity is very low (1 of 5), so it usually suits most skin types.
