Radish seed extract (Raphanus Sativus Seed Extract) is a fermentation product of Leuconostoc kimchii lactobacteria grown on radish seeds. It contains peptides and antimicrobial metabolites that suppress yeast, mold, and gram-positive bacteria. The marketing name is Leucidal Liquid. Where applied. In niche and clean-beauty formulas as a 'natural alternative' to phenoxyethanol, parabens, and benzoate. Concentration 2-4%, usually paired with a second preservative (e.g., glyceryl caprylate or anisic acid). Pure Leucidal does not provide broad-spectrum protection. Evidence base. Challenge tests (USP 51, ISO 11930) show good activity against gram-positive bacteria, but limited activity against gram-negative organisms (Pseudomonas) and molds. Works better in acidic environments (pH < 5.5). Formulas with pH > 6 need additional preservatives. Safety. Approved in the EU as a cosmetic ingredient. Allergic potential is low, but rare irritation has been described in people with severely impaired barrier. Non-comedogenic. 'Natural preservative' controversy. 'Natural' does not mean safer – the preservative load is weaker, and without backup the formula carries a higher risk of microbial contamination. ECOcert and Cosmos accept radish ferments but require challenge-test evidence of efficacy. Pregnancy and lactation – likely safe. No systemic absorption, extensive use experience. No restrictions.
