Baikal skullcap flower extract (Scutellaria Baicalensis Flower Extract) is the flower form of Baikal skullcap extract, an endemic plant of Siberia, Mongolia, and the Russian Far East. Contains flavonoids – baicalin, baicalein, wogonin, scutellarein. The active profile is close to root extract (more common and studied), but baicalin concentration in flowers is lower. Where applied. In niche K-beauty formulas with 'anti-inflammatory' and 'anti-pollution' marketing (0.1-1%), in sensitive-skin serums, in anti-aging formulas claiming 'UV stress protection'. On the Spanish market – rarely; root extract is more common. Evidence base. Baicalin and baicalein show in vitro anti-inflammatory activity via cyclooxygenase inhibition, antioxidant potential, inhibition of UV-induced matrix metalloproteinase synthesis (Choi 2015). Topical clinical RCTs specifically of flower extract in humans are essentially absent. Most data extrapolated from root extract. Safety. EU CosIng permits use. Mass-use experience outside Asia is limited. Allergic reactions are rare. Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution. Systemically (oral intake) skullcap extract in East Asian medicine is used with restrictions in pregnancy. Topically at cosmetic concentrations no systemic absorption, but due to lack of data manufacturers label CAUTION/UNKNOWN.
