Shellac (INCI: Shellac) is a natural resin made by the lac insect and refined for cosmetic use. It works as a film former: it leaves a glossy, durable layer on the surface. It is common in mascaras, hair fixatives, nail polishes and long-wear products. As a skincare active it offers nothing; this is a functional component. Its value is in texture and finish, adding shine and keeping color or a hairstyle in place. It does not treat skin or hair at a biological level. For topical use it is not meaningfully absorbed and can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation potential and low allergy risk. It suits sensitive skin. With lash or lip products, remove the residue well at the end of the day so the film does not build up.
