Sodium Carrageenan (INCI: Sodium Carrageenan) is a marine-derived thickener obtained from red algae. In a formula it gives body and viscosity, helps gel, and stabilizes the mix so it stays uniform. It is a functional ingredient, a texture agent, not a treatment active. It does not deeply moisturize or treat the skin; its value is the product's consistency and stability. In that role it does the job and is a common plant-based thickener. Applied topically it is not meaningfully absorbed, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is high, with low irritation potential and low allergy risk. In topical cosmetics it is considered well tolerated, including on sensitive skin, and has no notable comedogenic profile.
