A functional thickener and humectant. Safe.
Chondrus crispus powder (INCI: Chondrus Crispus (Carrageenan) Powder), known as Irish moss, is a red seaweed rich in carrageenans. These polysaccharides act in a formula as thickeners and texture agents, and on the skin surface they form a film that helps hold water. This is a functional component with a supporting humectant touch, not a treatment active. It thickens gels and emulsions, gives a pleasant texture and improves the feel of hydration through that film. The effect is supportive, not corrective. In topical use it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without trouble. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy potential, suitable for sensitive skin. Skin reactions to these seaweed polysaccharides are very uncommon.
