Larch wood extract (INCI Larix Europaea Wood Extract) comes from the wood of this conifer and provides arabinogalactan, a branched polysaccharide. In a formula it works as a humectant and light film former: it holds water at the surface and leaves a sense of smoother skin, which is why it is included in creams and masks. On efficacy, it is a supporting component within hydration. Arabinogalactan works as a humectant with some backing, though evidence for cosmetic claims is limited, so it is sensible to see it as a formula adjunct. Applied topically it has no systemic relevance, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good, with low irritation and allergy potential, suitable for sensitive skin. Already-sensitized people may see an occasional reaction, though most do not.
