Potassium PCA is the potassium salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA), a molecule found in the skin's natural moisturizing factor. In a formula it works as a humectant: it captures water and fixes it in the stratum corneum, which keeps the skin supple and looking well. It is used in serums, creams and formulas for dehydrated skin. Its basis as a humectant is solid, because PCA is a component the skin makes on its own to hold water. The surface-hydration effect is real, though it is best seen as a supporting active rather than a treatment that rebuilds the skin. With topical use it has no systemic relevance, so you can use it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is very good: irritation and allergy are both low, and it suits sensitive skin. It does not dry the skin or add comedogenic load, so it fits any skin type without trouble.
