Arginine PCA (INCI: Arginine PCA) is a hydrating ingredient made of the amino acid arginine bound to pyrrolidone carboxylic acid (PCA), part of the skin's natural moisturizing factor. In formulas it attracts and holds water and also helps fine-tune the pH. As an active it is a reasonable supporting humectant. PCA is part of the skin's natural hydration system, so the water-binding effect has a basis; still, its contribution is modest and it works better alongside other humectants than on its own. Topically there is no meaningful systemic exposure, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is good: irritation and allergy risk are both low. It fits hydrating formulas for sensitive skin, where it adds comfort without pulling at the barrier.
