In a formula it draws water into the stratum corneum and helps hold it there, so it acts mainly as a humectant. On efficacy, treat it as a supporting ingredient rather than a hero active. The PCA fraction hydrates reliably and magnesium supplies the cation, but on its own it will not deliver anti-aging or barrier-repair effects. It performs best alongside other humectants and emollients. Applied topically it has no meaningful systemic absorption, so it is fine to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tolerance is high. Irritation and allergy potential are low, it suits sensitive skin and does not clog pores. A convenient pick for lightweight daily hydration textures.
