Lanolin alcohol (INCI Lanolin Alcohol) is the alcohol fraction obtained from lanolin, the wax from sheep wool. In a formula it works as an emollient and a co-emulsifier: it softens skin, helps bind the water and oil phases and stabilizes rich creams, balms and sticks. It does its job well. As an emollient it cuts water loss and leaves skin more pliable, useful on dry and cracked skin. It is not a treatment active but a component that gives texture and occlusion. Applied topically it is not systemically relevant, so it can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding without issue. Irritation potential is low, but allergy potential is medium: lanolin alcohol is a known contact sensitizer, especially on damaged skin. Most people tolerate it well. Its comedogenicity is mild (level 2), so oily or acne-prone skin should keep that in mind.
