In a formula it supports hydration and, per the manufacturer, contributes to a feeling of firmness. As a plant-derived humectant it plays a reasonable role: the oligosaccharides hold water and improve skin comfort. The firmness side is more modest and independent data are scarce, so it is sensible to treat it as a supporting component in moisturizing and anti-aging formulas, without expecting a real tightening effect.
