Sodium PCA is the sodium salt of pyrrolidone carboxylic acid, the primary component of the stratum corneum natural moisturizing factor (NMF). PCA accounts for about 12% of healthy-skin NMF. Its levels drop with age and in atopic dermatitis. Mechanism. A powerful humectant: the molecule is hygroscopic and binds 2-3 times more water than glycerin at equivalent concentration. Maintains stratum corneum elasticity and supports acidic barrier pH. Sodium PCA leaves no film and no greasy residue. Where applied. Serums, toners, light emulsions (0.5-5%), oily and combination-skin products. In Spain – Sesderma Hidraderm Hyal, Isdin Hyaluronic Concentrate, Eucerin Hyaluron-Filler, CeraVe Hydrating Toner. Evidence base. 30% hydration gain in 4 weeks at 2% (Verdier-Sevrain 2007), TEWL reduction in atopics. Sodium PCA pairs well with hyaluronic acid and amino acids for a synergistic NMF complex. Safety. CIR confirmed safety up to 50%. Hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic. No systemic absorption through intact skin. Pregnancy and lactation – safe.
