In a formula it binds the oil and water phases together, keeps the cream stable and leaves a soft feel on the skin. You will see it in creams, lotions and makeup removers. On real-world usefulness, this is a functional formula component, not a skincare active. Its job is structural: it binds, stabilises and improves texture.
