Strontium salt that selectively suppresses sensory C-fiber activity in skin. Calms itching and stinging, features in soothing products after acids and retinoids.
Topical application
CWeak evidence. In vitro data, open-label studies, or expert consensus.
Short-term anti-irritant effect is confirmed by small RCTs. Long-term safety with daily use is poorly studied.
Strontium Chloride (SrCl2) is an inorganic strontium salt. In dermatology it is used as a selective suppressor of skin sensory C-fibre activity responsible for itch and burning. Mechanism. Strontium blocks calcium-dependent ion channels in peripheral skin nociceptors, lowering the itch and sting signal. Effect is fast – within 10-20 minutes of application. Acts locally, no significant systemic absorption. Where applied. Anti-sting products after acids, retinoids, peels; itchy-dermatosis creams; post-wax-epilation and post-laser products. Concentration 4-10%. Evidence base. Hahn 1999, 2001 in itch and sting patients showed fast relief (within 5-15 minutes) at 4% strontium chloride. Cosmetic use in premium post-procedure care. Safety. CIR confirmed safety at cosmetic concentrations. Not to be confused with radioactive strontium-90 – this is a stable isotope. Non-sensitizing. Pregnancy and lactation – use with caution. Direct pregnancy data are limited and manufacturers label as 'not for pregnancy'. For gestational itch the agents of choice are low-concentration menthol, colloidal oat baths, adenosine.

Strontium Chloride should be used with caution during pregnancy. Consulting a dermatologist or OB-GYN is advisable.
