Yeast Extract (Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Extract) is an extract from baker's yeast cells. Contains beta-glucans, mannoproteins, polypeptides, nucleotides, B-group vitamins, and antioxidant enzymes. In Asian cosmetics – a popular anti-ageing ingredient (think SK-II with galactomyces extract). Mechanism. Yeast beta-glucans in vitro models stimulate skin macrophages and fibroblasts to produce collagen. Mannoproteins – mild anti-inflammatory effect. B-group vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B5, B6) – cofactors for cellular processes. Claimed effect – improved texture, tone, and firmness. Where applied. Premium serums and essences (SK-II Facial Treatment Essence with galactomyces ferment, a yeast relative), masks, creams. In Spain – in Sesderma Reti-Age, Mesoestetic Cumlaude Bioferment, Skeyndor Power Hyaluronic. Use levels: 0.5-5%. Evidence base. Sakuma 2012 in an open study of 35 women over 8 weeks of 5% yeast extract use showed improved texture and hydration. Direct RCT comparisons with other actives (retinol, niacinamide) have not been done. Safety. CIR confirmed safety in 2015. In patients with yeast-product reactions (beer, bread, Candida allergy) cross-reactivity is possible – allergy risk is above average compared with other cosmetic ingredients. Pregnancy and lactation – safe. Usable without restrictions topically. Suited for. Mature skin with tone loss, dull skin, anti-ageing prevention. NOT for patients with yeast allergy or a history of systemic mycoses.
